Pack With Me: Packing Hacks & Tips for Traveling With a Carry-On

Traveling light with just a carry-on can be liberating and stress-free—no baggage claim waits, no lost luggage, and less to haul around! Whether you’re taking a weekend trip or a longer adventure, I believe that strategic packing is key.
Here are some tried-and-true hacks that I personally use as a frequent traveler to help you maximize space and efficiency while traveling with only a carry-on.

1. Choose the Right Carry-On Bag
Start with a high-quality, airline-approved carry-on suitcase or backpack. Look for features like lightweight material, 360-degree spinner wheels, and expandable compartments to make traveling easier.
Tip: A hardcover case protects from the elements, but a fabric cover can be more flexible for the overhead compartment.
This one is excellent quality and a worthy investment if you're a frequent traveler:

2. Plan Your Outfits
Instead of randomly packing clothes, plan complete outfits for each day, mixing and matching items to create multiple looks. Stick to a neutral color palette to ensure everything coordinates effortlessly.

3. Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes help organize your suitcase by grouping similar items together. They also compress clothing, maximizing space while keeping everything neat and accessible.

4. Roll, Don’t Fold
Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves space and reduces wrinkles.

For extra compression, try the “bundle wrapping” method, layering clothes and folding them around a central core item:

5. Wear Your Bulkiest Items
Save space by wearing your heaviest shoes, jackets, and sweaters while traveling. This not only frees up suitcase room but also keeps you warm on chilly flights.

6. Limit Your Shoes
Shoes take up a lot of space, so stick to two to three versatile pairs that can be worn for different occasions.
A good rule of thumb: one casual pair, one dressy pair, and one athletic pair if needed. (I usually wear my bulky athletic shoes on the plane.)

7. Use Travel-Size Toiletries
Invest in reusable travel-sized bottles for liquids and creams. Opt for solid toiletries like shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and solid perfumes to minimize the number of liquids in your bag.

8. Pack Dual-Purpose Items
Choose clothing and accessories that serve multiple functions. A scarf can double as a blanket, a dress can be worn as a beach cover-up, and leggings work for both workouts and casual outings.
My sister knitted me this scarf and although it's bulky, it's so cozy. I usually carry it on the plane and then use it as a pillow:
9. Utilize Every Inch of Space
Stuff socks, underwear, or chargers inside shoes to maximize every inch of your carry-on. Use the inside pockets for small essentials like jewelry or a mini first-aid kit.

10. Keep Essentials in a Personal Item
Pack important items—passport, wallet, phone, charger, medications, and a change of clothes—in your personal bag in case your carry-on needs to be gate-checked.

Final Thoughts
Packing light doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style. With a little planning and smart packing strategies, you can travel efficiently and hassle-free.
Try these packing hacks on your next adventure and enjoy the freedom of traveling with just a carry-on!
